I used the Windows Slimserver at first and it was fine. Very easy to
install and get going. The main reason I ended-up using Linux was
because I couldn't get Apple Lossless encoded files to playback gapless
under windows. Using ALAC on Linux solved this issue for me.

Another reason was that I wanted to get slimserver off my main Windows
box and onto a server that would be running 24/7. This server was to
be built on a budget with older/slower hardware. It's generally
considered that Linux is somewhat better than Windows under these
conditions. It also allowed me to avoid having to buy another licensed
copy of Windows.

Other than that, its a wash. In return for these benefits, I find that
Linux tends to be more challenging to install/upgrade/maintain. Once
you get it going its great (as great as on Windows), but dealing with
the idosyncracies of specific distributions can be aggravating at
times. I'd recommend sticking with Windows unless there's a compelling
reason (like the ones I had) to try Linux.
