Thanks to all of you, I followed many of these CC/SS threads, among other Linux ones, and as a total noob to Linux was surprised to get pretty far on my own just hacking away. I'm now at the point to work out the last few "how to" details and need some help to finally hear music. Once I figure it out I'll probably re-install over the top with all the right settings/sequences and clean it up. I just want to get to first base.
Here is where I am: - Installed CC4.0 onto a spare Dell Inspiron 1000. Runs fine in Celeron2.2/768k RAM/30G internal, no problems so far. I probably installed way too many packages I won't need, but to be safe I just left most of them in for now and added Samba. - Installed SS6.5 using the rpm examples on this thread. It's running fine, though at the moment I am only streaming internet stations to the SB3 players. No readable music directory content yet (see problems). Internet radio station streams do play through all 3 of my Squeezboxes fine, so I know the server's working. - Installed Putty and WinSCP on my HP WinXP box. Both work fine talking to the Dell/CC4.0 as long as I use the IP address and root account directly (haven't created any others). - Pointed Firefox on XP to 192.168.2.100:9000 and brought up the Slimserver page. All works fine. - Created a folder /root/music on CC just to learn how all this works. No problem. - Used WinSCP to copy a dozen or so FLAC files to the /music folder. No problem. - ls shows the FLAC files are definitely there, though I haven't checked permissions yet Problems/questions: - In the Slimserver Server Settings Music Folder I tried "/root" and it recognizes that. I tried "/root/music" where my FLAC files are and it doesn't accept it as a valid directory. - I have not done anything with Samba and rights yet. When I use the XP network browser looking at the MSHOME group I don't see my CC box at all. As I said WinSCP and Putty see it fine. - I don't know what decent practice is in terms of organizing what "users" other than root I need (see below) and how to set up the environment properly for where I'm going. I don't want to have to re-install everytime I learn something so I'd like to at least avoid a few noob traps (yes, I've been reading a lot). Here is what I'm trying to end up with: - Remote control/headless CC/SS box (well it's a notebook) with a 30gb (internal) drive for CC and a 500gb ext3 USB2.0 drive for music library. I already have a blank WD 500g external ready to go, nothing on it. - EAC on the XP box to copy CDs into the music library, preferably writing directly to the CC 500gb ext3 drive, hands off. - Play from CC/SS local 500g USB2.0 ext3 to my 3 SB3 players. - Fixed IP addresses for CC/SS and all SB3's (haven't worried about this yet) For now I'd be happy to work on just getting the music folder reference working in slimserver and work my way up to the others.
