Gah - I might have found this thread too late!

I had problems with SlimServer dying under Gentoo (it was a problem
with internet radio which was fixed in 6.5.1)

Anyway, I had teh same problem with SS claiming it was already running.
This cured it without having to reboot:

/etc/init.d/slimserver zap

With your other issue, not being able to access the web interface, and
not being able to use a local browser cos you only have remote access.
Did you consider installing a text-only webbrowser such as Lynx? It
should work via ssh, and even if you can't control slimserver
completely, it should work enough to confirm that SlimServer is
running.
