There were a number of mysql configuration files and a slimserver
configuration file (/etc/slimserver.prefs) that I had to update with
etc-update to bring in the latest versions.

I also set things up to use the slimserver-provided version of mysqld
instead of the Gentoo-provided version. I don't think this was really
necessary; I'm running Gentoo mysqld (5.0.26) on my system and it works
fine. The Slimserver version of mysqld (5.0.21) is statically linked,
so there are no shared library issues to worry about.

I verified that slimserver wasn't running on the system via "ps ax |
grep slimserver", and that there was no stale pid file in
/var/run/slimserver/slimserver.pid.

Then I did /etc/init.d/slimserver start; it gave me an "ok".

I did "ps ax | grep slimserver" and saw that slimserver and mysqld were
running, and had the expected arguments.

I then pointed my web browser at the host:9000 port, and saw the
slimserver web page.

That was it.

Alexis then got the Squeezebox connected, and changed the slimserver
language to French so I couldn't read it :-) (Too many years since
high-school French class!)

Linux is wonderful. Here I am in Boulder Colorado USA, troubleshooting
a system in France from my computer at home...
