I believe the Edgy kernel will allow you to mount ntfs as ro.  (I'm
assuming that your G drive is NTFS and not FAT.)  If you need to mount
it rw, google for ntfs-3g - it's probably in universe or multiverse.

I don't know whether there are any meaningful performance differences
between doing this as opposed to reformatting as ext3.
