What I would recommend: go pick up a USB 500G drive. Mount the old music drive as read-only NTFS, but format the new driver for ext3.
"Backup" everything to the external drive (you want this anyway, hence why i suggest it :)). Verify the backup is good. Heck, take your time with it -- use it as the main drive if you want and think of the old drive as your backup.... When you are satisifed that all went well that the backup isn't going to explode, reformat your old drive and copy everything back to it. If the old drive is Internal, then I would switch to using that and using the external as the backup drive. If they are both external, then just plug one in periodically for backups, then take it offline and turn it off and hide it at work or somewhere safe.
