The Debian distribution of Slimserver uses "root:root" for ownership of
the files and installs them into /usr/share/slimserver (and I
understand that Ubuntu is derived from Debian).

The "standard" RPM uses "slimserver:slimserver" and installs into
/usr/local/slimserver.

I've got both a openSUSE 10.2 system (main server) and a Debian system
(backup), so I noticed this fairly early.

I'm not sure what would have happened if you'd run that "chown"
command, but it probably wouldn't have fixed the problem.

I haven't used the Ubuntu desktop, but there's probably some way to
create an icon to run the gksudo command to invoke the filemanager.
With SUSE they have set up wrappers for this sort of thing that prompt
you for the root password before invoking the command. If you have
anything similar for system administration, you might be able to reuse
that somehow.
