That's fixed it! Thanks very much for your help. BTW, does having the slimdevices debian repo at the *bottom* of sources.list interfere with installing SS if I need to update / upgrade, for example to a more recent nightly? I ask because the wiki for debian installations makes a point of telling you to put the SD repo first in sources.list - presumably to ensure that it's the slimdevices packages that get installed. (And as I'm still at the 'painting-by-numbers' stage with linux, I don't know why or how much this matters).
