When editing the password file, I usually make a backup copy, edit the backup, run a diff on the two to make sure I didn't make any mistakes, then copy the backup to the main file. A bit complicated, but it has saved me once or twice.
I second the notion that knowing vi can be extremely useful in the Unix world.
