Thanks for the instructions bukharin, it worked a treat! Got in ok,
changed the password field to some random numbers and added the correct
colons (root::12345:6:78912:3:::). It was read only but vi told me to
add "!" to :x. After this I was allowed to change the password back at
command.

Thanks Robin for the intial advice, and I guess if I’d followed
nobspangle’s first post instead of trying to edit shadow, I may
have got there a bit quicker! - But I have learned a lot more by fixing
this than by just re-installing the OS.

I would still be interested in finding out how the original lock-out
occurred, in that I could log in via WinSCP but not the webconfig or
CC’s splashscreen, if anyone has any ideas?
