Not too much to put in a guide really - it's got an extensive online
forum of its own, it works quite well and doesn't need too much
attention.  Installing SlimServer is outlined here:

For faster speed on your lighter computer, you may want to look into
Xubuntu, or even faster - the server version.  However Xubuntu may not
have all the niceties regular Ubuntu has, and the server version is
command-line only (I think?), which would be quite difficult for the
Linux newbie.
