Michael, Since we were talking about SlimCD as being used as a permanent music server instead of just a demo earlier in this thread, I thought I would post the following here.
I have gotten my SlimCD installation, running on a Nano-ITX machine, to the point where I am satisfied with it. In the end it was a lot of work. I started down this path because I new next to nothing about Linux, and SlimCD allowed me to begin learning about it as well as offering instant gratification by getting something running that I wanted immediately. I learned what an ext2 filesystem was and how to format a 750 GByte hard drive, how to samba, use ssh, then it was getting Slimserver to decode aac, aacPlus, Apple Lossless, then learning about and adding ppp scripts so I could attach my USB cellphone card to my Linux box to stream Squeezenetwork. Then I learned about iptables and rc.firewall, etc. By the time I was done - considerable time had been spent! If I were doing this all over again, I think I would try installing with DSL-N, and then install Slimserver on top of that, along with your download of Perl - which I think would work? I did wind up adding a lot of things to SlimCD, but now that I have it really working - I could never go back to a Windows platform to serve this purpose. I like it a lot. Next, I am interested in getting a fanless pico-ITX system running DSL/Slimserver. You know - those boards are going to be so small, it might be possible to fit it inside a Transporter:) -Ron -- Ron F. *Squeezebox setup:* wireless SB3 -> CI Audio VDA.2 DAC + VAC.1 PSU *Main rig:* NAD 7600 + NAD 2600A -> Phase Tech PC-6.5 speakers *Headphone rig:* Headroom Max -> Sennheiser 650s *Other stuff:* NAD C542 CDP, NAD 6300 Tape, Monster 5100 Power conditioner, Outlaw Audio cables ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ron F.'s Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5616 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35744 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
