No need to guess at which one you'd feel most comfortable with. Download and install VMWare Server or VirtualBox (both free) and try out a couple different distros as virtual machines.
Only takes 15-30 minutes or so to set one up once you've downloaded the ISO's. You don't even need to burn to a CD--just mount the ISO in the dashboard of the VM console.
