No need to guess at which one you'd feel most comfortable with.

Download and install VMWare Server or VirtualBox (both free) and try
out a couple different distros as virtual machines.  

Only takes 15-30 minutes or so to set one up once you've downloaded the
ISO's.  You don't even need to burn to a CD--just mount the ISO in the
dashboard of the VM console.  Best part is that whatever distro you
settle on, just keep the associated VM and then use it for any
experimentation instead of the real machine.
