Thanks to everyone for their comments. Looks like Ubuntu may be the way to go. I'm a Linux newbie, but I have a lot of Unix System V experience from about 10 years ago, and back in the dark ages ran SlimServer on FreeBSD. So I'm hoping there won't be too much of a culture shock.
