I strongly recommend Ubuntu for folks like you. I use it on this laptop that I'm typing this on. For my server, I use debian, which is ubuntu's father or grandfather. It not quite as newbie friendly as Ubuntu But there is no such thing as a "best distro" in general. It depends on too many things.
