I am in a similar situation, the only difference is that my slimserver
runs on my Windows desktop PC. I have tried conversion with mplayer and
with besweet, both unsuccessful so far.

I have tried the following lines in the convert.conf, after a leading
line "ac3 wav * *":

[BeSweet\BeSweet] -core( -input "d:\test.ac3" -output #PIPE# -2ch )
[mplayer] -really-quiet -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$
[mplayer] -really-quiet -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=- $FILE$

I have taken that #PIPE# idea from the wiki article an aac+
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?AACplus).

Conversion on the command line works. I think my problem is that I do
not really know how to direct mplayer's or besweet's output into
slimserver because to my knowledge both mplayer and besweet require an
output file, but i might be wrong there. I have used "-" and "#PIPE#" a
output files, but both did not work. Maybe someone with extended
knowledge of besweet or mplayer could help. I would be grateful.
