A week old? 7.10 is from October 2007. That's 6 months ago. 8.04 was just released today. This and the 8.04 beta testers pounding on their mirrors is probably why it took so long to update.
There are no current problems installing from the slimdevices package repository. Please be sure you're using the correct URL. deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main Then simply install squeezecenter, and it will automatically get all the correct packages. You should have to select any extra stuff, it will do it for you. You do NOT need any mp3 packages to use squeezecenter. The Squeezebox itself supports mp3 decoding.
