Yes, it is exasperating, isn't it?! When I converted to GNU/Linux about a year ago, I had the same sense of frustration. I now almost never use Windows / M$ apps except at work; and I now realise most of my irritation with GNU/Linux was because I hadn't yet got into it's particular way of thinking about things, and I hadn't picked up how to use the vast community resources of support and advice -- I was still unconsciously stuck in thinking like Windows makes you think. So worry not! All will be well! But multi-media stuff can be tricky on GNU/Linux.
