The purpose of the redirection is simply to stop unnecessary output polluting the terminal, although I do not know where this output would go for the auto-started squeezeslave. The IP address is necessary as squeezeslave is running on a remote machine, not on the same computer as the server, and needs to know where the server is.
Many variations of the command work fine from the terminal, but none of them auto start, despite Yast being certain that it is running. Perhaps this is more SUSE 11.0 fun.
