The configure routine for mplayer will select the maximum options
according to the system (e.g. test for X11, DVD etc.)

Mplayer is a bit of a swiss army knife app and has decoders for a very
large number of formats both audio & video.  You can disable with
"configure" many formats/options but it will be trial & error to
determine if mplayer still works with those option disabled.

ffmpeg is very similar - it too requires a large number of libraries /
packages.
