You should also format that USB drive with the native file system you are using with xubuntu (probably ext3). I think it is OK to read from NTFS or FAT32 on Linux, but I'm not so sure about writing. USB drives usually come formatted FAT32, though sometimes they are pre-formatted with NTFS.
