I believe this is the problem that SuperQ mentioned above (and that I had), the drive gets mounted after Squeezecenter starts so it can't connect to music for scan/to play, so it won't see /media/FREECOM HDD.
As I mentioned in my post, the way I made this work was to automount the drive earlier in the process through the Fstab file.
