i've recently setup an old laptop with a lightweight ubuntu, u-lite (formerly ubuntulite) to run squeezecenter. laptop specs are:
300 mhz celeron 192 mb ram 100 gb hard disk (replaced the original 4 gb disk) my system setup is: squeezecenter on laptop with wired ethernet ~3500 flac files on linkstation live nas, mounted with cifs 2 squeezeboxes connected wirelessly via draft-n router the whole thing works pretty well - the laptop seems to be able run sc along with all the desktop without major troubles. a full rescan takes about 20 min, but that's infrequent. also, starting sc pegs the cpu, but that only lasts a short time. i've not noticed any significant impact on music playback. some questions: 1. cpu and memory on my server are potential limitations as my library gets bigger - is there any way to take advantage of the hard disk to improve performance? 2. i'd like to put the server in a closet and maintain it with an x-server or telnet from a pc elsewhere in the house. my linux distro is not a server distro, so i'm guessing i need to install more packages?? what else do i need to do on the server? i'll install cygwin on the other pc for x-windows. 3. i can use nice or renice to increase the sc priority, but where do i put the command string to make it permanent, as in each time i reboot the server? 4. how do i configure runlevels so i can start the server in command-line mode? i tried this a few years ago with xubuntu and it ignored me. thanks in advance, rov -- rov ------------------------------------------------------------------------ rov's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10787 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55334 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
