The new format for convert.conf has bitten users on all platforms.

It's certainly worse if you weren't using a custom-convert.conf file,
since your changes would be overwritten, but even if you had used it
the same changes in syntax for the file would cause the rules to fail.

Seems to me there should either be an alternative convert.conf for
Linux users, or possibly include a custom-convert.conf with some
suggested rules in it that are commented out for different platforms.
