That's actually not a bad idea.  Running Solaris I use mplayer for AAC
and ALAC and that info wasn't readily available when I needed it. 
Perhaps rather than go by platform, give more options in the
custom-convert.conf such as grouping it by decoder, such as:

#FAAD2 decoder used on Linux etc.

#mov flac * *

#Mplayer decoder used on Linux, Solaris, *BSD, etc.

mov flac * *

alc flac * *

Just uncomment and go.  If there are any really weird ones (like
Solaris) some special notes or additional entries that are shown as
platform specific may be needed.

This may be worth submitting a bug report for to get it included.
