In spite of various bumps along the way, I managed to get the MSI Wind setup that folks have talked about here working. Since I wanted to use this box as a file and print server, and potentially as a more general purpose at home web-server, I wanted to do this with Ubuntu (even though I'm pretty green on the Linux front---been a Windows guy for years).
Following the lead of others in these forums, I've installed to a 4GB UDMA CF card, 2 GB RAM, and stuck the SATA drive that had previously been holding my SC music library on my Synology NAS inside the case. As others have noted, MSI engineers were not very smart about their placement of internal CF slot, as it is not particularly easy to get to. I ran into lots of weird issues on the first go round software wise, but eventually started from scratch in complete frustration. Don't we all just love learning by doing :-) Total cost from NewEgg without 750GB SATA drive was ~$200 US. For those attempting to do this without a CD drive (as I had done), I used UNetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to place the Ubuntu LiveCD image on my 1GB USB stick... This actually made it very easy to just start over when I bailed after the first attempt. So far my read is that this box is cheap, fast, quiet, small, and good fit for this application (as well as being a print and file server for my wife, daughter and myself). It has allowed me to decommission my Synology DS-106e NAS (underpowered for running SC) and the Mac Mini that I'd been using for my Squeezecenter server. Obviously there is some tweaking left to do, but I'm very glad to be over the initial hump... P.S. after several previous half hearted dabbles into Linux over the years (each attempt abandoned after getting myself completely in trouble), Ubuntu has been a much better experience. Still not completely ready for the masses, but it is quite elegantly done... -- kennyschiff ------------------------------------------------------------------------ kennyschiff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11363 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=58323 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
