Desktop. I was worried about fitting server on the CF card.

Based on what I'd read elsewhere, I bought a fast UDMA card. Here's
what I bought:

I notice no performance issues with running machine, which I'm doing
headless, using Free NX, a great remote desktop app (much better than
VNC).

I have this in the closet where I keep my cable modem and router. While
it's not silent, it's pretty darn quiet. I think it as quiet as my
former Synology NAS. My ears are pretty shot on the high end, so I'm
not a great determiner of this.... however, others consider this very
quiet.
