To be honest I prefer to do this at the router (keep using DHCP, but tell it to always give the same IP to a certain machine - most routers have this function). But in your case it sounds as if you're not setting the DNS server and Gateway values - you'll need both of these set properly for it to work. Typically (but not always) you'd set them both to the IP of your router.
