Thanks for the great suggestions!

I changed all my static IP addresses to the admissible range, but while
that might save me other problems, it was not the problem.

The problem is a bug in one of the Fedora interfaces for configuring an
internet connection. When you go to System>Administration>Network,
select a connection for edit, and select the option for a manual IP
address, there is no place to enter the DNS IP address.

But you can configure a connection by right-clicking on the network
connection icon, select “edit connetions”, and create a new connection.
In this case, there is a box for the DNS IP address.

When you do this, be sure to either delete or disable the connection
that is created using interface 1--only after that connection is
unchecked in interface 1, or deleted in interface 2, will the
connection created with interface 2 be implemented.

That this was the problem was revealed when I discovered that I could
connect to the intenet if I entered the IP addresses of the web site.
For example, http://66.102.1.103 got me to google (while
http://www.google.com got me the can't connect message).

Thanks again for your help.

Randy
