Thanks for the great suggestions! I changed all my static IP addresses to the admissible range, but while that might save me other problems, it was not the problem.
The problem is a bug in one of the Fedora interfaces for configuring an internet connection. When you go to System>Administration>Network, select a connection for edit, and select the option for a manual IP address, there is no place to enter the DNS IP address. But you can configure a connection by right-clicking on the network connection icon, select “edit connetions”, and create a new connection. In this case, there is a box for the DNS IP address. When you do this, be sure to either delete or disable the connection that is created using interface 1--only after that connection is unchecked in interface 1, or deleted in interface 2, will the connection created with interface 2 be implemented. That this was the problem was revealed when I discovered that I could connect to the intenet if I entered the IP addresses of the web site. For example, http://66.102.1.103 got me to google (while http://www.google.com got me the can't connect message). Thanks again for your help.
