thanks for the pointers, your Vortexbox looks nice but I specifically want the openfiler package (apparently used to be based on Fedora/Centos) because of iScsi etc. In fact have it sweetly configured with software RAID arrays (4.5TB usable), ups support and hddtemp support for all my drives. I've become paranoid about drive temps since I've had 5 out of 5 WD5000KS drives fail and be replaced under warranty. I think all due to heat. Smart otherwise seems useless as it only tells me the drive has failed!
