Install 8.04 Hardy Heron, the Long Term Release? If you want stability, the LTS is the proper way to go. Think of Ubuntu's LTS as equivalent to Debian Stable, and the bleeding edge stuff like 8.10 / 9.04 etc (that occasionally does break things) as more like Debian Testing. If you can't / don't want to risk things breaking, and having to fix or live with the problem, stick with the LTS.
