In a typical linux setup it isn't really single access to you. Most important, SC runs under user 'squeezecenter' and you don't want that user to have write access to your music library. A bug in SC and 777 permissions could let user squeezecenter make a mess of your music library. I've never seen such a bug and you might think I'm paranoid to consider the possibility, but it costs nothing to make the directories 755 and files 644, so that's what I do.
