I've just update to 7.4 on debian stable & have a few of the same issues( unable to scan any files ...)
It seems as though the squeezeboxserver user & group didn't get created properly, & the directories were all owned by root. The install didn't create the group at all, but as a group with id 111 (lpadmin) already exists I guess that's not too surprising. I added a new group squeezebox id 1111,hacked the id of the squeezeboxserver user to 1111, and reset the ownership of the install dirs. Now everything works correctly.
