Weird. Are you certain the fw is off ? Iptables needs to be stopped AND
cleared to let the traffic flow. I guess there is an
"/etc/init.d/iptables clear" command to that effect.

I just confirmed the broadcast goes to 255.255.255.255. I logged on the
main server 192.168.1.10 (otto) and ran tcpdump for a little while.
Code:
--------------------
    otto:~# tcpdump udp port 3483
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on eth0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 96 bytes
  01:00:41.000456 IP otto.3483 > 255.255.255.255.3483: UDP, length 16
  01:01:41.000595 IP otto.3483 > 255.255.255.255.3483: UDP, length 16
  01:02:41.000458 IP otto.3483 > 255.255.255.255.3483: UDP, length 16
  ^C
  3 packets captured
  3 packets received by filter
  0 packets dropped by kernel
  otto:~#
--------------------

(And yes, for me discovery works and always have. But I don't run any
SuSE machine, for what its worth.
