Magic, thanks guys. I'm ashamed to say I'd convinced myself that VortexBox was a hardware only thing, I'll look into it!
I figured that this machine would make a good server, and it's sitting in the spare room doing nothing at the moment. It's quiet and very light on power too. I use SyncBack for backups, so it sounds like that will work fine. Apple lossless? Simply because I use AppleTV a lot, and I just find it easier to keep one set of files for both SBS and AppleTV. And using apple lossless in SBS gets easier with every release of SBS. WOL - bios was set to WOL when running Win, so assuming the CMOS battery's not gone flat it should be good to go!
