Over the last couple of years I'd been trying to get an old laptop going as a music server. It originally had Windows XP on it, but something was wrong with the drivers for the ATI Radeon X1400 graphics such that it crashed or locked up unless in safe mode. I tried a whole succession of Ubuntu variants at various times - if I could get the graphics to work I had problems with suspend, or networking after a suspend, or Wake On LAN, or whatever. It never ever worked properly even with arcane settings in various config files based on somebody else's solution...
After each long-winded failed attempt I reinstalled Windows and set it to boot into basevideo mode. This sort of does the job but looks completely stupid. On Thursday evening, without a great deal of hope, I installed 10.04 and Squeezebox Server 7.5.0. It all went on without a hitch, the new ATI graphics driver gives full res and good performance with complete stability. Suspend/resume works fine, and the all-important Wake On LAN actually worked without me having to set anything up at all. Everything that didn't work before now works, no fiddling with config files - fantastic ! -- karma mechanic ------------------------------------------------------------------------ karma mechanic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8868 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77971 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/unix
