Thanks, but I found another work around after thinking about this issue. I found that the "NTFS configuration tool" (ntfs-config) in Ubuntu software center was already installed from an earlier release, 8.04 where it still was in testing and unsupported. Something was going on with that package since the dist upgrade. I removed that package, and then re-installed it. Re-enabled the drives and looks like all is well.
