I tried various combinations. With "hw:CARD=ALSA" I get:

[09:18:34.711631] output_init:1298 requested buffer_time: 20000
period_count: 4 format: any mmap: 1
[09:18:34.797898] output_init:1322 output: hw:CARD=ALSA maxrate: 48000

With "-o hw:CARD=ALSA -r 96000" it seems to be limited to 16bit samples
and fails:

[09:20:59.245895] output_init:1322 output: hw:CARD=ALSA maxrate: 96000
[09:20:59.344816] alsa_open:257 opened device hw:CARD=ALSA using format:
S16_LE sample rate: 44100 mmap: 0
...
[09:21:06.400646] output_thread:748 track start sample rate: 96000
replay_gain: 0
[09:21:06.401746] output_thread:562 open output device: hw:CARD=ALSA
[09:21:06.426081] alsa_open:236 reopening device hw:CARD=ALSA in plug
mode as plughw:CARD=ALSA for resampling
[09:21:06.435510] alsa_open:257 opened device plughw:CARD=ALSA using
format: S16_LE sample rate: 96000 mmap: 0
[09:21:06.438767] alsa_open:305 buffer time: 21312 period count: 4
buffer size: 2046 period size: 511
[09:21:06.442756] alsa_open:319 unable to set hw params: Invalid
argument

Same happens with "-a 21:4:24:1" and variations thereof. Maybe the
hw/driver limit is 48kHz? too bad.

[09:41:17.685340] alsa_open:262 unable to open audio device requested
format: S24_LE
