I agree that's why I find it mysterious.  However I have worked with
embedded system before and seen unpredictable beahviour which can be due
to software interacting with hardware.
I think it might be a timing issues in setting up the video hardware -
microcore might be too fast and my cubieboard might be at the wrong end
of the build tolerance.  
As I mentioned before there are a lot of error message during microcore
boot - this gives me some concern but I haven't had time to investigate
and see what is generating the errors.
