Yes, I can confirm that hw:* doesn't work and plughw:* does. This experience is consistent with earlier experiences on a thin client and a Raspberry Pi. I think it has something to do with this particular sound card (luckit waveio: http://luckit.biz/new/?tcp_product=waveio).
