I can't vouch for that hardware - there are people on the alsa list saying it works but has problems with sample rate changes. There are some very recent linux kernel changes which may be relavent, but which we don't have yet - these may help and I will look into them. As for Toslink - with the stock hardware I think it depends if you are willing to rewire the hardware - if so then the support should be able to get better with kernel changes, but I think you are going to be disapointed if you don't like soldering... The comminity hardware should fix this and have a non PLL clock.
