I don't want to over simplify this but basically you format the USB stick correctly, mount it where the cache is and that's it? If you don't want to rescan it is advisable to copy the contents of the cache first and copy back to the stick once it's mounted, yes? I'll have a look at WInSCP, that sounds great for simplifying the copying process.
