Regarding the different Linux. I not a Linux expert, but what I think is the good thing with microcore Linux, is the fact that it is very robust, because nothing is written to the sd-card, so it works just like a normal hardware audio player, just pull the power without any risk of ruining your player. It is also very small and therefore boots fast and as it is running entirely in RAM the performance is good, and I think that some of the issues with clicks in other distroes is caused by writing to the card. Some of the disadvantages are the fact that it can be difficult to add other programs. In addition the USB issues in the raspberry are still not solved, so some of the problems with different USB DACs are probably caused by these issues.
