Thanks for the kind words.

Yes I'm confident that even a very cheap USB-DAC from ebay will improve
your sound quality immensely. 

I don't know why you are experiencing these cracks/slowdowns using
analog audio, but also Johnyb62 have these problems on one of his
raspberry boards (Revision 2 with 500 MB RAM). My raspberry is a version
1 with only 256 RAM and I don't have these problems. But hopefully they
will be solved at some time if we continue updating the kernel with all
the improvements.
