This is what I've been using it for too. I put mine in old '80s
boomboxes mostly. I also built a patio stereo inside a waterproof
sprinkler box. So far, these devices are working really well.

I am having a bit of trouble with the boombox in my kitchen. It is
always plugged in, so the Pi is always running because it has a separate
power supply from the stereo and they don't get switched off together.
After a couple days of continuous up time, and following an overnight of
inactivity, when I try to send music to that Pi, it won't play and I
have to unplug it to sort it out. I have no idea what the issue is but
I'm waiting with my fingers crossed that the next release will be a bit
more stable in that regard.

The only other thing I'd like to see is support for Airplay. LMS is a
terrific system but I also use Airfoil which opens up essentially
limitless options for audio sources from my desktop that can be streamed
to an Airplay device.
