No, I guess I don't *-need-* it as such but I guess I use the server
since it's there :) It is part of my home office network (I program
embedded systems for a living*) so it was the simplest place to put
everything. My music collection was on a LinkStation NAS / DLNA server,
but that's getting on a bit; I couldn't be bothered to faff around
setting up an LMS server on it even if it was likely to last much
longer! (it's allegedly possible but...) So I moved the music collection
to the existing office server (also an HP Microserver) and it will
shortly go over to the "home" server.

The new HP Microserver is as a cheap as chips, built extremely well
(part of our business puts them on cruise ships as passenger info system
servers) and will become a new home media server, part of which will be
the LMS.

(* I sometimes think of making a Squeezeplayer on something like a
Cortex M4/M0 combo (similar to, but cheaper than this:
http://www.cieonline.co.uk/nxp-unveils-lpc-solutions-for-internet-radio-audio-streaming-and-dual-hi-speed-usb-applications.aspx
but I have enough stuff to deal with without re-inventing the Pi
wheel!)

I suppose it's horses for courses, but it sounds pretty good to me. Then
again, it's in the kitchen so exquisite music quality is not essential.
Are you talking about the old Squeezebox, or the new UE Smart Radio?
Perhaps the quality has improved.
