So the process would be:

1) copy the config file from the SD card to a usb flash drive
2) write the new image on the SD card
3) boot with the SD card and the usb flash drive connected to the pie
4) the config file is copied automatically to the SD card and it can be
removed before the next boot

Is this correct?

But as piCorePlayer is running from ram, wouldn't it be possible to make
an upgrade from the web interface while piCorePlayer is running? I would
assume, that the image could be downloaded, or possibly even only the
changed files, and updated on the SD card? 

This would be really great.
