Yes, using bluetoothctrl I was able to get a pairing and connect, but
then the device just went into a disconnecting/connecting loop.  That's
as far as I got.  I couldn't then figure out what command removes the
device from the configuration, because subsequent attempts to connect
just gave a mass of errors.

The other point is that with bluetoothctrl I had to explicitly turn the
bt adapter power on.
