I am not sure if the present piCorePlayer kernel supports IR though.

I think most people use an app to control piCorePlayer.

The only advantage of a IR control I can think of is for pausing...no
password...no starting app...no getting the right screen.

I plan to put a [Play/Stop] button on my pi, a lot easier than
programming for IR controller.
