If it's a permissions problem, doing

sudo gpasswd -a squeezeboxserver audio

may help. It adds the audio group to squeezeboxserver, and hence local
player. On the LMS, settings, advanced page for local player, does it
list one of your devices in the drop-down list?
if you just run squeezelite from the command line with '-l', what
devices does it list? If none, you may need to add the audio group to
your user as well.
If you need more help, it will assist if you include the command line
you are using to run squeezelite or local player.

as well (not that I am an expert on such things). Look at the top of

LMS 7.9 on VortexBox Midi running Xubuntu 14.04, FLACs 16->24 bit,
44.1->192kbps. Wired Touch + EDO, coax to Musical Fidelity M1 CLiC.
Wireless Xubuntu 14.04 laptop controls LMS via Chromium. Meridian
Explorer USB DAC to listen via Squeezelite on Vortexbox & other PCs as
required. Spare Touch in loft.
